    Eco Council 2024-25

Welcome to Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn’s Eco Council page for 2024-25!

This year, our Eco Council is embarking on an exciting journey towards making our school a greener, more sustainable place. Building on the efforts of previous years, we are determined to work together to achieve the Green Flag Award, which Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn has proudly held in the past. We are committed to putting in all efforts this year to secure this eco-accreditation once again.

Our passionate team of Eco Councillors will be involved in various projects and activities that not only improve our school environment but also help foster environmentally responsible and healthy habits among pupils.

Our key focus areas for this year include:

    • Applying for the Green Flag Award: Having achieved this award in previous years, we are eager to regain this recognition by meeting all the necessary criteria through dedicated work and school-wide participation.
    • Litter Picking & Recycling: Establishing a rota for litter picking, as well as recycling paper across the school, is one of our top priorities. We aim to fundraise for dedicated recycling bins in each classroom to make it easier for everyone to contribute.
    • Weeding & Planting: In collaboration with the Friends of PYB, we are planning to plant new trees, shrubs, and vegetables to enhance our school grounds and support biodiversity.
    • Healthy Eating Promotion: As part of our commitment to the Welsh Government’s healthy eating plan, we will be promoting fruit and vegetables at break times. We are also thrilled to be reintroducing the popular Tuck Shop, offering fresh, local produce.
    • Reducing Waste: Leftover fruit and vegetables from the school will continue to be donated to the Welsh Mountain Zoo, helping reduce waste and feeding some very lucky animals!

Our goal is to nurture healthy, confident and ethically informed individuals who will contribute positively to both our school and the wider community. With our collective efforts, we are working towards making Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn a model of sustainability and eco-friendly living.

Stay tuned for updates on our progress and upcoming events!

    Cyngor Eco 2023-24

The Eco Schools programme is a pupil-led, international initiative that encourages pupils to engage with environmental and sustainable development issues. The key areas that we look into are:

    • Litter
    • Waste
    • Transport
    • Healthy living
    • Energy
    • Water
    • School grounds
    • Global citizenship

Along with our regular initiatives of litter picking and collecting paper recycling, this year, pupils have achieved one of their long-term goals of setting up a Tuck Shop. Having completed a round of consumer research with the school, they presented their findings and a business plan to the Friends of PYB requesting funding. They were able to invest this money in equipment and their first fruit order. The Eco Councillors then had a meeting with our head cook about health and safety and food hygiene to ensure the fruit is stored and prepared properly.

The Tuck Shop is now up and running, with fresh, locally sourced fruit, being available to the Junior children everyday of the week.

As a little incentive, a lucky ticket holder is selected at random at the end of each week to receive a week of free fruit.

In order to increase the sustainability of this project, a link has been made with the Welsh Mountain Zoo so that any surplus fruit is taken to the zoo to be eaten by some very lucky animals.

Our next ambitious project involves renovating our school grounds with the support of the Friends of PYB. The Eco Councillors would love to start growing their own fruit and veg. We had mild success last year with a handful of carrots and miniature strawberries but, as ever, they are thinking big!

We have also received 15 tree saplings to help encourage greater bio-diversity and to help decrease the school’s carbon footprint.
